Position Summary

The Garment Technologist is responsible for managing the day-to-day technical requirements of the development samples in line with the critical path from initial prototype to production working across a wide variety of mens and womens outerwear. This a creative and technical role working closely with the design team and factories in China to ensure development samples meet customer quality, style and fit expectations.

Main Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the development of garments from design/order stage through to production ensuring they conform to customer expectations.
  • Risk-assess new orders to highlight and solve any issues with the sales and production teams. Recommend any changes to design, construction and fabrics to ensure final product is commercially viable.
  • Measure, assess and fit samples on the stand prior to fit sessions, making notes on specifications and discrepancies.
  • Organise, attend and participate in customer fit sessions to ensure accuracy of information and fit and translate comments for factories to easily understand along with amendment sketches and photos.
  • Manage and maintain consistency with the “self-approval” process.
  • Liaise with external quality assurance approval agencies and 3rd party quality auditors.
  • Liaise directly with Far East factories throughout the development and production process.
  • Internally fit product for all self-approving customers and submit comments and photos to relevant departmental Garment Technologist.
  • Assist factories with pattern & construction methods by making pattern drafts and sample mock-ups.
  • Produce and maintain garment specifications including creating and grading rates.
  • Prepare and issue graded specs.
  • Analyse test reports and work with factories to ensure that any lower/falling grades are improved to customer commercial standards.
  • Propose and approve fabric testing and care labels.
  • Monitor and update the critical path for all styles.
  • Access and update online Customer Web Portals in relation to fits and testing.
  • Check fabrics and trims on Production Samples to ensure they adhere to approved quality and appearance.
  • Maintain the Technical and Production Photo Library on designated system.
  • Continually assess quality levels and construction techniques, ensuring factories adhere to customer specifications.
  • Ensure that factories follow retailer guidelines and create and update the QA manual as required.
  • Assist in managing and training a Junior Garment Technologist.
  • Partake in weekly production meetings with Production Manager.

Essential Skills

  • Proven track record as a Garment Technologist with UK high street experience.
  • Menswear and/or womenswear technical background.
  • Ability to sign off product to Gold Seal Standard.
    -Team player with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Previous experience in delegating work to an assistant technologist.
  • Strong fashion eye with the aim of completing most of the work before sending out buying samples.
  • Proactive with the initiative to ensure the technical and sealing process runs smoothly
  • Computer literate MS Word and Excel.
  • Excellent organisational skills with sound knowledge of the critical path.
